Midterm Finals Reflections

As the title suggests (so blatantly), this report was written at the very end of the first semester. A bit of an interesting final, I don't like to have to write under pressure, but then again, it's also when I'm most motivated to produce. I seem to also remember that this was the first of my real essays to follow Mr. E's essay format completely. Until then, I was using the same steps, but in random order. In total, it took me 90 minutes to complete. I dubbed it "The Prize Within the Pursuit" because I always like to think that there are greater forces at work than we can see in both our lives and books (especially this year's). Take Kaffir Boy, for instance. At the end of the story, Johanes finds the motivation to pursue an education because of the effort that his mother gave to prevent him from recieving the same fate that befell her. Where does the motivation originate from? In my opinion, Johanes felt enough love for his mother, father, and himself, enabling him to take action. Had he not felt love for his father, Johanes wouldn't have acknowledged that emulating his father was a bad idea. He would simply distance himself for his own safety. If he had not felt love for his mother, this story wouldn't even be printed.
